Where were your ancestors 30,000 years ago?  Brian Sykes uses mitochondrial DNA to answer that question.  This book explains why mitochondrial DNA can be used to trace maternal ancestry and describes research on Europeans and Polynesians. It was written in 2001 so a lot has happened since then, but it's a very interesting book.
